Abstract
Geometrical fiber parameters such as outer diameter and cladding ellipticity are important for the splice loss estimation of single-mode fibers.1 The NFP (near field pattern) method is usually employed as a reference test for measuring the fiber outer diameters,2 but this requires a destructive process for outer diameter measurements. It would be more convenient if a nondestructive measurement technique could be used to estimate fiber diameters. We investigated a guided acoustic wave Brillouin scattering (GAWBS)3 technique for estimating fiber outer diameters.
