Abstract
Graphene has unique mechanical, electrical, and thermal characteristics that make it appealing for a variety of optoelectronic applications. Here, we present recent advances in integrating graphene with silicon channel waveguides and planar photonic crystal cavities to make this otherwise weakly absorbing material optically opaque. Based on these devices, we demonstrate high-speed modulators and photodetectors for optical communications in the telecom spectrum. The silicon photonic integrated circuits used in these studies were fabricated using fully CMOS compatible processing.
