Abstract
Semiconductor waveguides are an integral part of potential integrated nonlinear- or quantum optical devices. Great care has to be taken during the design to engineer a proper eigenmode structure. Experimentally, however, the fundamental properties of the eigenmodes (e.g. propagation loss and index, relative excitation, dispersion) are difficult to assess and can usually only be inferred from indirect measurements.
