Abstract
While 3D photonic crystals possessing a line of touching propagation bands have been known for some time, no similar 2D structure with full confinement in the vertical direction have been proposed. Our design takes advantage of accidental degeneracy of the TE- and TM-like modes to create a Dirac-type line degeneracy in the first Brillouin zone. Additionally, we introduce a perturbation that opens a complete band gap at this line. An interface between two such photonic crystals is shown to support gapless edge waves. The quadratic dispersion of these waves enables 2D localized slow-light propagation, as well as high transmission in the presence of sharp corners.
