Abstract
We present the first experimental demonstration of an optical filter based on multiply coupled waveguides [1, 2]. The experimental results matchnumerical simulations (2D FDTD) which utilize a modified effective index method (MEIM) approximation [3]. MEIM plus 2D FDTD provides high accuracy as it correctly describes in 2D both the phase and the group indexes of 3D silicon wire. The compact optical filter of a size 40*200 μm2 with a set of 12 directional couplers constructed on SOITEC SOI wafer with 220 nm of silicon provides at optical wavelength 1.59 μm a FSR about 16 nm and 3dB linewidth about 1.6 nm [2].
