Abstract
Rare earth doped chalcogenide glasses (ChG) have attracted considerable interest for applications in nonlinear integrated optics and, by virtue of their intrinsically low phonon energies, the potential for mid-IR sources at wavelengths not reachable with other host glasses. Whilst rare earth doped ChGs have been intensively investigated, to date there have been only four demonstrations of gain/lasing using Nd and Pr at 1.08 and 1.3μm.
