Abstract
Various renewable energy technologies have been proposed which would make use of efficient solar lasers, a solar-magnesium fuel cycle for example [1]. Existing solar lasers, however, are inefficient due to the weak, narrowband absorption of their neodymium-doped gain media. Semiconductor gain media have the potential to overcome these limitations. They can make use of all photons with energies above the bandgap energy, and their short absorption lengths permit a disk laser geometry, which simplifies the problem of overlapping the solar pump distribution with the cavity mode.
