Abstract
Laser diode (LD) pumped ultrashort pulsed solid-state lasers have been widely studied. For such lasers, gain medium with broad gain bandwidth are required. Recently, Ba(Zr,Mg,Ta)O3 (BZMT) ceramic, a novel transparent ceramic, was developed by Murata Manufacturing [1]. Nd3+ ions doped BZMT (Nd:BZMT) ceramic exhibits a broad gain bandwidth with FWHM of 30 nm due to its disordered structure. In addition, BZMT ceramic has higher thermal conductivity (3.1 W/mK) and thermal shock parameter (302 W/m) than glass. Therefore we have been investigating the continuous wave laser operation and the ultrashort pulsed laser operation of Nd:BZMT ceramics[2,3] to seek the possibility of replacing Nd-doped glass. In ref. 3 we reported on the first passively CW mode-locked operation of the A-site Nd:BZMT ceramic. The maximum average power was 11 mW and the pulse duration was 1.4 ps.
