Abstract
The semiconductor laser with an injected signal is a conceptually simple system which nevertheless displays complex dynamics including chaos. Experimental and theoretical studies of this system have tended to focus on single mode lasers. Using an inverse problem solution, which relates the threshold gain modulation in wavenumber space to the spatially varying refractive index in a Fabry-Perot (FP) laser, we have designed a two-colour FP laser diode with THz primary mode spacing. For a primary mode spacing of four fundamental FP modes (480 GHz), we observe simultaneous oscillation of the two primary modes and cavity enhanced four-wave mixing sideband formation [1].
