Abstract
Two remarkable phenomena associated with the propagation of classical waves and quantum particles in periodic media under the action of an external force are Bloch oscillations and Zener tunnelling [1]. Optical analogues of these fundamental effects of wave physics have been demonstrated for one-dimensional periodic structures based on waveguide arrays and, very recently, for two-dimensional optically-induced square photonic lattices [2].
