Abstract
The neodymium ion doped laser material Nd:GdVO4 has recently attracted interest for its good lasing and mechanical properties. It has nearly one order of magnitude larger absorption cross section (5.2×10−19cm2) than Nd: YVO4 at 808nm and relatively broader gain bandwidth (1.25nm) which makes it suitable for mode-locking operation with pulse durations shorter than for Nd:YVO4 lasers. Finally, Nd:GdVO4 crystals have unexpectedly high thermal conductivity along the <110> direction, comparable to Nd: YAG but much higher than that of Nd: YVO4.
