Abstract

Photons of energy >3.5 ev eject external photoelectrons from the valence bands of the semiconductors Cs2Te and Rb2Te with a quantum efficiency as high as 30 percent. Fundamental optical absorption sets in roughly at this same point. These materials are similar to Cs3Sb, except that they have forbidden energy zones almost twice as wide. Consistent with this, energy distributions show no evidence for electron-electron scattering up to =6.7 ev. These substances are interesting for ultraviolet photometry.
