Gray-scale fidelity in volume-multiplexed photorefractive memory

Abstract

The effect of gray scale in writing-beam intensity on the recorded refractive-index modulation is investigated by using both scheduled and incremental recording dynamics for volume holographic multiplexing in photorefractive materials. The refractive-index modulation of gratings obtained with scheduled recording is found to depend generally on the writing-beam gray scale, causing the distortion of the stored gray-scale information. In contrast, holograms multiplexed with incremental recording support high fidelity in gray-scale information storage. Theoretical predictions are verified by experimental results.
