Abstract
The nonlinear Maxwell wave equation in the paraxial approximation has been solved with three standard beam propagation methods: finite-difference (FD), finite-element (FE), and spectral (Fourier). The particular case of high-gain single-pass stimulated Raman scattering in gases has been considered because of its relevance in tuning high-power ultraviolet lasers. For weak nonlinear interaction the FD and the FE methods are recognized to be faster than the Fourier method, whereas they are of comparable stability. This situation changes when the gain reaches a certain limit: The numerical dispersion of the FD and FE methods becomes such that only the Fourier method is applicable.
