Abstract
The forward far-field pattern of a laser beam scattered by a water-suspended homogeneous sphere trapped by a focused laser beam is investigated. The analytical formula for the intensity distribution of the far-field pattern is derived, and the numerically calculated results of the formula agree with the experimental results within the maximum deviation of 7%. A new method of trapping a particle is developed for observing the accurate forward pattern. We employ the balance between the radiation pressure of a focused laser beam and the hydrodynamic pressure that is due to water flow near the water surface in the cell.
