Effect of leaky modes on the response of short optical fibers

Abstract

It is shown that the inclusion of a contribution from the continuous spectrum (in the form of leaky modes) removes certain nonphysical discontinuities from results previously published on the excitation of dielectric waveguides. A particular example involving visual photoreceptors is discussed.
