Recording characteristics of volume holograms

Abstract

Exposure characteristics of volume holograms are analyzed. The exposure characteristics are different from those of planar holograms. The cause of this is re-exposure by the diffracted reference and signal light. Coupled-wave equations that describe the dynamic behavior of the volume-hologram recording process are derived, and characteristics of several types of volume holograms are calculated with these equations. The exposure characteristics of volume holograms are affected by the dimensions, shape, and absorption constant of the recording material and by the phase difference between the local irradiance and the resultant changes of the refractive index or absorption constant. However, these parameters do not have serious effects.
