Abstract

A simple method for measuring the absolute value of diffuse spectral reflectance has been developed. Instead of the usual integrating sphere a small sheet of opal glass is used to diffuse the light beam before it falls on the sample. A simple equation has been derived for calculating the absolute value of diffuse reflectance of the sample, which is placed behind this opal glass plate. As a test of this method, the diffuse reflectance of MgO was measured. The results showed a fairly good agreement with the previously published data. This method has two chief advantages: (1) it provides a new and independent means for measuring the absolute values of diffuse reflectances, and (2) it can be readily used for many purposes because it employs a simple attachment for commercially available recording spectrophotometers.
