A Design for an Absolute Light-Scattering Photometer

Abstract

An optical design for the receiver of a light-scattering photometer is described. The design lends itself to a simple analysis, in terms of geometrical optics, which shows that absolute measurements of the Rayleigh factor are easily made.

Modifications of the receiver of a Brice-Phoenix photometer in use in this laboratory are described and analyzed.

A preliminary value of 46×10−6 cm−1 at 436 mμ and 23° C is given for the Rayleigh factor for benzene.
