Abstract

The ratio of the third-order nonresonant susceptibility of water to the nitrogen nonresonant susceptibility has been measured by coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy. The measured ratio (2.27) appears in good agreement with the value (2.24) obtained by dc-electric-field-induced optical second harmonic generation. Probable error in the measurement is estimated to be ~12%.
