Abstract
Several types of laser Doppler velocimeter are considered for remote measurement of wind velocity. Particular attention is given to the range dependence of the mean power SNR when scattering is from natural aerosols. Numerical estimates for two systems are presented, indicating that CO2 laser systems have considerably greater sensitivity than visible laser systems at ranges greater than a few meters.
