These images were taken with a 2D spectral surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging system fro determining the gigapascal-level pressure distribution in elastohydrodynamic lubricant films entrapped during the impact of a steel ball aqainst a glass surface. This technique brings SPR to a new application area beyond the boundary of biomedical-related topics. The SPR detector prism itself might find applications as a sensing guage device for remote monitoring of pressure levels in a variety of objects, including gas cylinders, building structures, etc. For more details, see the paper by Ho
