Abstract
It is commonly agreed that bright optical solitons can exist in systems where the signs of group-velocity dispersion (GVD) tod nonlinearity are opposite. The optical fiber with its anomalous GVD and focusing Kerr-like nonlinearity is the most prominent example. This approach relies on the Taylor expansion of the propagation constant up to, at least, the second Order in the deviation from the mean frequency and leads to the nonlinear Schrodinger equation. But if the pulses are shorter than 100 is and/or the system exhibits a strong dispersion, higher order terms in the expansion have to be taken into account.1,2
