Abstract
We report the first observation, to our knowledge, of the Si (111) 7 × 7↔1 × 1 phase transition by means of optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) at surface, The phase transition from 7 × 7 to 1 × 1 around 860°C has been reported by many researchers who used electron diffraction techniques1 and STM,2 but we know of no reports to date that discuss the use of optical techniques.
