Abstract
Much work has been done on properties of molecules in inclusion compounds, primarily using absorption spectra to determine the behavior of these molecules. Clathrates are inclusion compounds that form a 3-D cage around a guest molecule. First recognized in 1947,1 they have since been extensively characterized, the most studied clathrate structure being the β-quinol lattice (Fig. 1). This system has a cage whose size is of the order of 5 Å, making it ideal for the study of quantum confined photochemical processes of small guest molecules.
