Abstract
Mid IR–visible–near UV optical properties provide information on the structural framework of the ceramic materials within which high Tc superconductivity occurs. In this spectral range, accurate optical data can be obtained even on the highly scattered surfaces of polycrystalline (sintered) materials, as spectroellipsometric measurements are relatively insensitive to macroscopic surface defects. In addition, analysis of these data is greatly simplified because the strong optical anisotropy characteristics of the far IR is substantially reduced. As sintered samples are easy to prepare relative to single crystals, this has enabled systematic studies of these materials over wide ranges of phases and chemical substitutions.
