Abstract
If light is scattered on a condensate, atoms are scattered in forward direction due to the absorption of a photon. Since the emission of a photon is preferentially along the long axis of the condensate, atoms obtain a recoil kick under an angle of 45◦ in forward direction (see figure on the left). The photon emitted along the long axis of the condensate can be absorbed by another atom in the condensate. After stimulated emission of this photon in the laser, this leads to a recoil kick under an angle of 45◦ in the ’counterintuitive’ backwards direction. Since the forward and backward emitted atoms are coupled through the same photon, they become entangled.
