Abstract
Lidar as a technique for stand-alone optical remote sensing of atmospheric extinction seems ideally suited. Its ability to provide highly range-resolved data with excellent temporal resolution on small atmospheric volumes from a single source point suggests that it may be useful for three-dimensional investigation of atmospheric properties.
