Band-Structure Approach to Synthesis of Grating Couplers with Ultra-High Coupling Efficiency and Directivity

Abstract

We propose a complex-wavevector band-structure approach to synthesis of fiber-to-chip grating couplers, and show apodized bi-level designs with 95% coupling efficiency and 99% directivity using only two device layers of a monolithic SOI CMOS process.
