Abstract
Fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers (FFPIs) made of regular single-mode fibers (SMFs) have high polarization sensitivity because of the random inherent and externally induced birefringence. The polarization sensitivity in a scanning FFPI generally produces two distinct resonances corresponding to the two principal polarization states inside the fiber. Under external disturbances, the two resonance peaks become unstable because of random polarization-mode coupling. FFPIs used in sensor and fiber-ring-laser systems, in which the random polarization-mode coupling is not tolerable, must therefore be formed with polarization-maintaining (PM) SMFs.
