Abstract

A lossless optical switch would be a key component for photonic switching.1 To attain a lossless optical switch, the technology of photonic integrated circuits has been applied to the semiconductor optical switch, integrating traveling-wave amplifiers (TWAs) on a substrate.2,3 Recently, we reported the lossless and very-high-ON/OFF-ratio (>50 dB) operation of a 4 × 4 optical switch that has a novel switch structure called a carrier- injection-type optical single-slip-structure (S3) switch with a traveling-wave amplifier (COSTA).4 Here, we report the highspeed signal transmission characteristics of the integrated amplifier in a lossless 4 × 4 COSTA using a 2.5-Gbit/s signal.
