Abstract
Recent analyses of wavelength chirping in directly modulated semiconductor lasers have led to improved understanding of which aspects of chirp are fundamental to the modulation process and which are laser structure dependent.1-3 We summarize the basic mechanisms of chirping and their simple relations to the optical power waveform. These observations lead to fundamental capacity limits for dispersive optical fiber transmission with simple single-cavity transmitters such as DFB lasers.
