Abstract
Various nonlinear optical processes start to appear in optical fibers at much lower power levels than in bulk glass form due to the long interaction length.1-4 Among those processes, stimulated Raman scattering can affect the performance of wavelength-division multiplexed systems by causing significant cross talk between channels at power levels of typical cw laser diodes (~1.0 mW).1,2 The amount of the cross talk has only been estimated so far from Raman gain measurements using high-power pulsed lasers and relatively short fibers.2'3 This paper reports a direct measurement of Raman cross talk in a 21-km long single-mode fiber using two cw laser diodes operating in the 1.3-μm region.
