Multi-level Optical Recording Using a Blue Laser

Abstract

We have developed two original methods for multi-level data recording on optical discs. One is a data detection method named Data Detection using Pattern Recognition (DDPR) [1] that enlarges the recording margin and the reproducing margin, which are the definitive parameters for recording quality. The other is a new data modulation process that combines LSB (Least Significant Bit) Limited Modulation (LLM) with DDPR as a means of reducing data errors. Experimental results obtained using a blue laser test system showed that combining LLM with DDPR is an effective way to reduce data errors.
