Abstract

It has been projected that, during the next decade, data processing centers will be overrun with archive data, have a severe backlog of data to process, and be out of floor space for data storage equipment. It is further projected that stores of 1013 data bits will be required on-line and that 1015 data bits need be off-line and available. Furthermore, data throughput must be improved, most likely by using data transfer rates far exceeding 20 Mbps.
