Abstract
We describe results of measurements of the diffraction efficiency of KTa1−xNbxO3:Cu,V in the cubic phase using the quadratic electrooptic effect. Diffraction efficiencies of over 50% in a 3mm thick sample were measured. In addition, by making use of the quadratic electrooptic effect, it is possible to couple the amplitude of the index grating directly to an applied electric field, thus enabling amplitude modulation and switching of the diffracted beam. Control of the photorefractive gain by an external electric field was demonstrated at modulation rates up to 30 kHz.
