Abstract
Reflective erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), in which both the pump and signal lights are twice-passed though the gain medium by using optical circulators and reflectors, perform better than conventional EDFAs. This new type of EDFA was proposed in 1990 [1] and several theoretical analyses have been carried out [2,3], but no detailed experimental results have yet been reported. This paper presents measured and calculated results for reflective EDFAs and compares them with those for conventional forward-pumped EDFAs.
