Abstract
Nanoparticles possess advantageous properties that make them interesting for the use in various applications. Their stability in aqueous environments strongly depends on interfacial potentials and the microscopic structure of their electrical double layer. Polarimetric angle-resolved second harmonic scattering was used to determine the surface potential with respect to bulk water or electrolyte and the orientation of water molecules at the surface for colloidal SiO2 particles as a model system in different ionic strength conditions.
