Abstract
Absorption and luminescence spectra of Ho3+ in Lu3Al5O12 (LuAG) have been measured in the 0.3–2.2-μm wavelength region at various temperatures between 8 K and room temperature. The energy levels of the ground state 5I8 and the first excited state 5I7 have been determined by using these data. Luminescence spectra have been obtained by exciting Ho3+ into several upper manifolds, such as 5S2 and 5F5. In determining the energy levels of 5I7, emission transitions that terminate in the 5I7 manifold and absorption transitions that terminate in the 5I7 manifold were matched. These experimental energy levels of Ho3+ in LuAG were compared with results obtained by theoretical calculations.1 A comparison of experimental results between LuAG and YAG has also been made for these manifolds.2
