Abstract
The interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with solid matter is studied at peak intensities upto 1017 W/cm2. At these high intensitites very rapid ionization of the material is expected to occur during the duration of the pulse. Because the time is too short for significant transport of mass and energy it is expected that the interaction results in the formation of a thin plasma layer of approximately solid state density which expands rapidly away from the surface.
