Abstract
Over the past several years, the interaction of squeezed light with atoms has received considerable theoretical attention because of the possibilities for altering the fundamental atomic radiative processes with the nonclassical fluctuations of a squeezed state. Indeed since the seminal work of Gardiner,[1] there has been a small industry devoted to the analysis of diverse phenomena involving the atom-field interaction in the presence of squeezed light, including problems in resonance fluorescence, laser operation, optical bistability, and cavity quantum electrodynamics. From the perspective of precision measurement, one important application is the possibility for spectroscopy with sensitivity beyond the usual quantum limit, which is set by the vacuum fluctuations of the field.[2]
