Abstract

When the eigenmode expansion method (EEM) is used to model the propagation of light in a continuously z-varying waveguide, where z is the waveguide axis, the waveguide must be approximated by many small z-invariant segments. This procedure gives rise to a second order error in the solution. In this paper, we develop a fourth order EEM.
