Abstract
In the area of high power dielectric waveguide lasers a very important problem is increasing the average power levels that can be achieved for a given level of pump signal. This may be done by techniques that optimize the spatial distribution of dopant ions with respect to the local field intensity; the result is that the laser is pumped primarily in an evanescent field away from the maximum modal intensity. This allows an increase the power per lasing mode before gain saturation sets in as well as a decrease in the amount of Amplified Spontaneous Emissions (ASE). In fact recent technological advances [1] have paved the way for ultra-high power single fiber single mode lasers with average powers from 100 to 1000 Watts per fiber. This paper extends the basic concept of optimized dopant distributions and evanescent pumping to include doped PBG materials that are used to create the evanescent fields. This paper concentrates on the fundamental principles by predominantly focusing on the physics of the one dimensional problem.
