Abstract
Spatial solitons in photorefractive materials have witnessed some considerable interest in the last few years due to the low intensity that are required to reach the optical nonlinearity necessary for beam trapping. However a detailed study of the spatial dynamics of a (1+1)D light beam and the spatial transient occurring during the transition from the input beam profile to a soliton is, to our knowledge, still lacking.
