Abstract
Spot-size expanding and reducing fibers are required for collimating a beam from a fiber, focusing a beam onto a fiber, and matching spot-sizes between different waveguides. Several methods have been proposed to change the spot-size, including a tapered fiber, a thermally diffused expanded core fiber, a microlens fabricated directly on the end of a fiber, and a graded-index fiber tip fused to a single-mode fiber.
