Abstract
Mechanical devices for laser cavity Q-switching exhibit desirable features including insensitivity to laser wavelength, beam polarization and laser crystal birefringence, plus absence of background optical losses in the open state. On the other hand, most mechanical Q-switches suffer from wear of moving parts, resulting in limited lifetimes.
