Abstract
Fast protons, produced by the interaction of an ultrashort (≤1 ps) laser pulse (USP) with a thin foil target, are currently the subject of an intensive study1–6 stimulated by the prospect of their unique applications in medicine, material science, fast ignition of inertial fusion and nuclear physics on a tabletop. To make this prospect feasible, the proton production efficiency and proton beam characteristics must be considerably enhanced. The possible way to attain this goal is optimization of the target. In this report we show that characteristics of forward-emitted proton beams are significantly influenced by the target thickness and they can be improved by the proper selection of this thickness.
