Abstract
Development of an optical fiber sensing element for chemical detection requires a mechanism to transform the presence of the chemical into a physical effect that can be measured optically. In the sensor presented here this is accomplished by coating the fiber with a material which will swell, or change its dimensions, on exposure to the specific chemical. Using a simple 1-D model the change in length of such a sensing element is given by
