Abstract
The Novette Laser Fusion Facility, presently under construction at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is a two-beam irradiation facility whose on-target laser energy at 0.53 μm will exceed 10 kJ in pulse lengths of 1.0-5.0 nsec. Its construction was motivated by recent experiments at much lower energy, which confirm more efficient coupling of laser energy to fusion targets at short wavelength. These results indicate the immediate need for a high-energy facility to perform experiments at short wavelength to compare with data previously obtained at 1.06 μm.
