Abstract
Large aperture second and third harmonic conversion and target physics experiments have been conducted at LLNL using the Argus laser as the 1064-nm pump. Fourth harmonic conversion experiments are now in progress (Jan. 1981). Monolithic 9-cm aperture KDP crystals have been used to convert down-collimated 8-cm diam 1064-nm laser pump pulses to successive harmonics of the fundamental, i.e., to 532 ran (2ω), 355 nm (3ω), and 266 nm (4ω). Harmonic output energies as high as 103 J were obtained using a pump pulse duration of 700 psec. Target absorption on planar targets increased from ~30 to ~90 %, and a significant reduction in hot electron production was observed compared with our earlier 1064-nm target irradiation experiments.
